Be My Valentine!

Okay, I’m officially excited now! The proof of Eros has just returned from the editor (the wonderful Karen at – and, goodness me, what it difference it makes having someone edit it professionally). That means that – aside from a few last minute changes, it’ll be ready and published on Valentine’s Day.

I’ll be the first to admit that, as an eternal singleton, February 14th generally isn’t my favourite day of the year. I think this time around it’s going to be different though. After the first couple of books of Blood Destiny started doing well, I didn’t really have to worry about whether the series would continue to be successful because, well, it was a series. As an entirely new venture, Eros is creating all sorts of nervous fluttery emotions deep within the pit of my stomach. For a start, it’s much more obviously ‘romance’ than Destiny. But, damn it, I’m proud of my creation so regardless of the feedback or the eventual outcome, I’m thrilled to be able to put it out there. And Valentine’s Day is by far the perfect day for releasing a novel about the God of Lurve.

In fact, my scanty research into the day of love already has me considering what I can write about for next year. Legend has it that in the third century, Valentine was a priest serving under Emperor Claudius II (not, sadly, the I, Claudius of Robert Graves’ fabulous book). When said Emperor banned marriage for young men, preferring them to serve in his army as romantically unattached soldiers, Valentine rebelled and continued to perform clandestine marriage ceremonies. He was, alas, found out and ended up on the end of a hangman’s noose. Not before he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and sent her a secret letter signed ‘From Your Valentine’ though. What a gorgeously romantic tale…
